Introduction Nearly 8000 people are diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in the UK every year, with approximately 3700 deaths accounting for 2% of all cancer deaths in the UK [1]. It is estimated that between 50 and 60% of RCC cases are incidental findings on radiological examination, with only a few presenting as the classical triad of loin pain, haematuria and palpable renal mass [2]. With advances in diagnostic imaging and increased awareness of symptoms, more than half of diagnoses are made at an earlier stage, with tumours being limited to the kidney at initial diagnosis. However, a quarter of patients will present with advanced disease that is either locally invasive or metastatic [3].
